Jan
23rd. Most
digital SLR cameras are sold in a kit form with a standard
18-55mm type of zoom lens. While suitable for more common
photo situations, such as group shots of people or wide-angle
landscapes, a standard kit lens is not as practical for capturing
distant subjects. The solution is to invest in a secondary
telephoto zoom lens which provides the longer focal range
to zoom in on the subject from further away, ideal for sports
or candid photography. A popular solution is a telephoto zoom
lens that offers a focal range from approximately 55 to 200mm
coverage. We
have had the opportunity to review the Nikon AF-S DX 55-200mm
F/4-5.6G IF-ED VR Nikkor lens, and feel it provides a good
example of the advantages offered by a longer zoom lens in
this focal range. The Nikon AF-S DX 55-200mm VR is a reasonably
priced, compact and lightweight telephoto zoom lens, and serves
as a complement to the standard 18-55mm kit lens, providing
a combined range of coverage from 18mm to 200mm focal length
(DX format) or 27mm to 300mm in 35mm terms.

7th. Nikon
recently released the 10.1 MP Nikon J1 digital camera, one
of their first entries into the mirrorless interchangeable
lens compact camera market. The Nikon J1 is positioned as
the current entry level model in the new Nikon 1 system, and
is designed to appeal to family and travel photographers by
featuring a very compact form factor, and by offering a wide
range of both user friendly automatic options and manual creative
control. Compared to Nikon's DX format F mount SLR cameras
like the Nikon D3100 and D5100, the Nikon J1 offers a much
more compact design by eliminating the optical viewfinder
and incorporating a smaller sensor and lens mount. A more
direct competitor to the Nikon J1 is the Sony NEX-C3 mirrorless
interchangeable lens camera. The Sony NEX-C3 differs from
the Nikon J1 in that it incorporates a larger APS-C type sensor,
the same size found in Sony's Alpha SLR camera's like the
SLT-A65, and approximately the same size as the one found
in the Nikon D3100. We
have now published a Nikon
J1 versus Sony NEX-C3 Comparison Review to
show how these two cameras compare against each other.

recently released the AF-S Nikkor 50mm F/1.8G, a reasonably
priced fast prime lens geared towards enthusiast photographers.
When attached to a digital SLR camera with a DX format size
sensor, the lens offers approximately a 75mm field of view
in 35mm equivalent terms.
As a result, The Nikon AF-S 50mm F/1.8G presents itself as
a good portrait lens, although
it can just as easily be used for other types of applications
such as travel, low light and fine art photography. By providing
a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, the Nikon AF-S 50mm F/1.8G
offers both an extended depth of field control for still and

motor in the lens, the AF-S 50mm F/1.8G provides full auto
focus capability with all Nikon digital SLR cameras, including

as their predecessor, although both camera's now incorporate
a new 12 megapixel (MP) back-illuminated CMOS sensor compared
to the 14 MP CCD sensor found in the SX210 IS. Showcasing
the evolution of the Canon ELPH brand, the new PowerShot ELPH
models have now instituted a “HS” suffix to represent the
inclusion of the HS SYSTEM in each model. Introduced last
year, the Canon HS SYSTEM is a technology used to enhance image quality
in low-light situations without the need for a flash. Making up the
HS SYSTEM in these new models is Canon’s DIGIC 4 Image Processor combined
with the new High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor, which helps to reduce noise
at high ISO levels and expand the camera's dynamic range, ultimately
capturing greater detail and colour in images in darker settings, like

Dec
7th. If
you are in the market for a compact camera with a long range
zoom that will fit in a pocket or purse, two options for consideration
are the Nikon Coolpix S8100 and the Fujifilm Finepix JZ310
/ JZ300. The
Nikon Coolpix S8100 and the Fuji Finepix JZ310 offer similar
top line specifications with 12.1 megapixel resolution, a
wide angle 10x optical zoom lens, offer HD movie recording,
feature a number of automatic Scene modes for user friendly
picture taking, and come supplied with a Li-Ion rechargeable
battery and charger. The Nikon Coolpix S8100 is however priced
at a considerable premium (as much as 60% more based on the
manufacturer's recommended retail price) compared to the Fuji
JZ310 / JZ300. We have now done a side by side comparison
review between the Nikon Coolpix S8100 and the Fuji Finepix
JZ310 / JZ300, taking a closer look at what might make the
Nikon S8100 command the higher price, and why it may be worth
spending more on a premium priced compact camera versus a
more budget priced model (although with many similar features)
like the Fujifilm JZ310 / JZ300... See
